Donald Trump winning the presidency is the worst thing that's happened to our country in my lifetime, and I don't say that lightly.

I've seen things I didn't like. I've witnessed tragedies. I've had a lot of disagreements with our country's policy decisions. I've watched our government carry out wars on abstract concepts that none of us wanted in the first place.

But I've never been ashamed of my country. I've never been ashamed to be an American.

You may not like the outcome of the 2016 Presidential Election, but for you to call yourself "Ashamed to be an American" is an affront to sensibilities. Even with 30+ years of socialism dressed in the guise of liberalism. Something BTW another great American, Ronald Reagan at the 1964 RNC Convention spoke of how socialism could spread through the USA if it's dressed as liberalism, you still live in arguably the best nation on Earth. A nation where millions of people have come to and want to come to and to embrace Americanism.

Yes, many have and also come to the USA take and steal from it much like pigs at the trough. But most people as immigrants who know by being an American citizen grants them rights and privileges most others in the world do not have and as such these citizens want to contribute back to the USA. But also many born in the USA citizens who were brought up correctly to believe in American exceptionalism, its rights, freedoms and as such they also know they owe this nation by its liberties all they truly ever gained.

You complain about all sorts of issues in your post that you find foul in the past, yet you are now ashamed because you have a President (elect) who IMO still believes in America and at this time still in its rightful place in the world, warts and all. Many other people outside the USA would gladly trade places with you Sombrio. The American democratic system spoke Nov. 8 2016. People are DONE with cronyism, blind globalism, socialism dressed as liberalism. They are done with being told they are somehow bad for just being Americans and believing or wanting to believe in it's historic values and ideals. As a Canadian who loves my country with its warts and all and would never be ashamed of it even though we currently have our version of 'Obama' and a 'man' who is beta cuck as P.M. but as such I know this, if and when America does well, Canada by being permanently joined at its proverbial hip does well too. In fact much of the western, developed, idealized world does well by extension too.

As to any and all 'backwards' nations be they culturally, socially, politically and economically backwards, by such they all in a sliding scale deserve to be failures that they are.

So you can IMO wrongfully carry your shame, that is your right, but it's your loss.

Mark my words President Donald J. Trump will in the end of his eight years be one of the best Presidents in US history. A Saviour he is not. A perfect man he is not. But a man who loves the USA and has a vision and a seeming ability to move it forward.

The Founding Father's were visionary by having a Electoral Collage. They knew in a growing and expanding nation that a vote for POTUS by only popular vote would forever see an imbalance between what would be a limited number of large cities/metro centers vs. a wide and diverse town and rural areas. The voice of the farmers, ranchers, hunters, miners, developers etc. would never be heard vs the voice of an often not on the same page to them, city/metro areas.

I'm still trying to sort it all out. It's not the end of the world, but he is definitely the wrong person for urban America.

If was guessing this was going to be the outcome, we will have to wait and see what happens. But trump really needs to address the hate in his campaign.

For what it's worth. Here are my thoughts.

1. Trump won, fair and square according to our system of democracy. But. Hillary won the popular vote, so as far as I'm concerned, the majority of Americans don't buy into Trump's bullshit ideology.

2. There are bright spots - especially if you're a Californian. It was a decidedly progressive ballot in the Golden State with a number of progressive, and important, measures being approved. And Clinton winning by over (I think) 3 million votes.

3. Trump is not nearly as extreme as he seems. The comments he's made about how he markets to people... His books. His interviews. They all explain what he did. Pandering to sensationalism, and approaching the world as though any news is good news is the best way to make money, or gain power. It worked. And that sucks. And he likely won't be good for our country. But he also won't be fatal. The fact that his campaign took down a number of key policy initiatives from his website that I found objectionable (including the muslim ban and the Mexican wall) gives me some hope. He campaigned to the extremists. But he might govern from the centre.

4. Trump looked absolutely terrified and out of his league, when meeting with Obama today. Perhaps he learned a little humility? The fact that he's pandering to Obama is both amazing, and telling in my opinion. I don't think he ever wanted to win this election, and I think now that he's won it he will be a timid, ineffectual President that'll last a single term. Nothing good or bad will get done.

5. I am still proud to be American. Only in a developed democracy can a transfer of power like this occur. Only in a democracy like this can there be a (sad) but legitimate debate. America is deeply divided. But that division is what gives America it's dynamic tension - and that dynamic tension is what makes America great. And a leader in the world. I still believe that, and I always will. This was, is, and will continue to be an amazing, if flawed country. I wouldn't have it any other way.

6. Les - fuck right off. Trump won. But your political ideologies are still despicable. You're attempts at argument and logic laughable. And your writing pathetic. You have nothing of substance to add to any conversation you stumble across. You're not American. This isn't your fight. Kindly go fuck yourself.

Trump is not afraid to be POTUS, it's not in his nature. He is a strong example of an alpha male. His visit with Obama was not an 'out of his league' thing, but him analyzing and beginning to size up what it will before him. He knows he has a big task but he will be up to it. He has a mind that most of us do not. A mind that is about getting all details he needs to win but also to build a consensus. One can have both. Rural and most any other parts of the USA outside the North East and Pacific were very much ON BOARD THE TRUMP TRAIN! There was none of this "we don't like him" stuff with them. He and his message resonated to the ideals of tens of millions of Americans who believe the USA has been awash in liberalism and its overt P.C. bull shit. Trump's winning and keeping the House and the Senate as well as getting the USA to 39/50 Republican Governors was the biggest FUCK YOU in generations and it could not come soon enough.

I was against a trump presidency, I always thought he was running as a joke, not sure if he was or not, but that man just got a reality check. I like to believe trump will have americas best interests in mind, but he needs to address the hate in this country very very soon.

The electoral college doesn't vote until December, the idea of it is to protect the country if someone is a threat to the country. Given the hate fueled during his campaign it may be justifiable for the electorates to change their vote based on the populate vote.
