Can't drive the VW again

So this happened:

2.0 GS Sport (5 door) with a 6 speed and the moonroof package.

It's not as quick as the TDI - and certainly not as quick as the Miata or GTI. But it's a fun, spirited drive. Handles really nicely, and the shifter is great. Quicker than my Civic or CRZ. Fuel economy is really good (so far) - about 6.2 - 6.5 l/100km in the city. Apparently it averages high 5s on the highway. 0% financing. And now the TDI sits and waits in our garage until we can figure out what VW is going to do about it.

We were going to get something else anyway - but all this VAG business made it happen sooner than later.

i have to admit, i've been quite the mazda fanboy recently, ever since i've owned one.. (and possibly the shittest one, with the least power )

How long are you going to let the VW sit?

It's probably at least 4 months, but closer to 9 or 12 months before any sort of fix is available.

Yeah, it seems like it. But really we had contemplated the purchase of a second car for a while. We knew we were doing it. And the Mazda 3 was on my shortlist as well. This just made it happen a little quicker (but, really not much quicker) than it would have otherwise.

Then, as much as you don't want to hear it, swallow your pride and continue to drive the VW until this subsides. It will not be a sellers' market for VWs any time soon. If you have it, you might as well drive it; if you're going to sell it soon, you'll probably eat a chunk.

Yeah. We aren't going to sell it or trade it in. We'll drive it sparingly though. And see what happens with VW - whether they buy back, fix, etc. IF they fix it and it sucks there'll be some sort of compensation or settlement. If they fix it and it doesn't suck and it doesn't pollute, then we may just keep it or trade it in for something for my wife.

Yeah. I'm a little pissed about the STi too. I was pretty seriously thinking about it. But with this news, we kinda felt that we should get something a bit more practical, reliable, efficient and what not. Something not as tired and possibly in need to shop time than an 11 year old highly strung race car for the road.

May still be possible down the road if the VW thing gets sorted out quickly. And my wife gets comfortable driving a manual….

It's a ton of fun to drive. But no where near Miata levels of pure enjoyment tough. Still - it handles wonderfully, accelerates nicely, and it carries a lot of stuff. We still have the TDI - but depending on what VW decides to do this Mazda may be the only practical car we have for a while...

Well.... shit. Kinda wishing I hadn't sold the MGB at this point. I mean hell - that's quickly turning into the best car I've owned, recently.

Well, the good news is that I checked my VIN and date of manufacture. I'm outside of the recall zone. So far.

So all's good now!

The bad news is that I have to stop making jokes about my MG being less likely to consume me in fire. it was almost certainly more likely to burst into flames.

just a normal recall, they know what went wrong, they are addressing it quickly.

not really a big deal unless you get into an accident and fuel spills out. More common problem would be stalling or hesitation during a purge cycle when it sucks raw fuel into the intake.
