That's right, I'm in love with a Toyota. And a Subaru. And a Sc...Sciaaahh... a Toyota.

Yep. I hear you man. If I go back to buying something new(ish), after the MG. And it's not something practical (for diving / camping / hiking / photography etc), I think it'll be the Subaru version of that car. Took a close look at one last year and really liked it. Great feel in the drivers seat. Seems about the right size (unlike the Veloster / Genesis coup). And all the reviews have said it's basically as good as it gets, for the price range. Still need to drive one, though.

I keep wanting to love them, but there's just some kind of charm its missing. Maybe over time they will grow on me, but as of now, it's just not the car I thought it could be.

The Subaru version needs a turbo. The Toyota version can stay slow like everything else they make nowadays.

Funny that you say that. C&D has the 2014 V6 Camry getting to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

Which is as fast as a first generation Boxster S. Or a 2013 BMW 328.

Faster than either a Miata or a last gen GTI.

And only a few ticks slower to 60 than a WRX. In fact, in 2008....: http://www.caranddriver.com/features/surprise-speed-tournament-feature-toyota-camry-v-6-vs-subaru-impreza-wrx-page-2

That was before they got the power bump. In 2010 they got the 265hp (supposedly underrated) and are capable of 4.7 0-60 and low to mid 13s in the 1/4. And that was really just supposed to be a crack about how Toyota decided to stop making sports cars.

But they do make a sports car (kinda) with the FR-S. And they make a powerful / fast car. So why not have they make a turbo-charged FR-S?

In any case, apparently it isn't going to happen. I recall reading a (fairly) recent article which said that the idea of a performance edition FR-S / BRZ is shelved. The basic cars didn't sell well enough, so the thought was that there'd be little appetite for a more expensive version. Which is too bad. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if these cars weren't cancelled after another year or two of poor sales.

Just goes to show that the desire for performance cars, along with driving enthusiasm generally, is on the decline. I think we'll look back and figure that the late 90s to the early 2000s represent the end of that era.

They have identical engines. If the Sub gets a turbo, so will the Toyota. I've also heard rumors the Toyota one will be dumped and Subaru is working with BMW for an engine. No idea if that's true.

I wouldn't be surprised if they both get dumped. Cool little car, but way too expensive. It was only like a grand cheaper than the WRX. They need to be closer to 20k than 25k to make it worth it.

Oh man. Imagine if they shoe-horned an I6 into that body? I'm all aquiver. Likely be a Turbo 4 though, I'd imagine.

It's an overpriced, underpowered sports car. Like the DeLorean.

Oh hardly dude! 0-60 is still in the mid 6s which puts it competitive against the Miata, the GTI, and other hot hatches. And its handling is, from what I read, phenomenal. Better than what you get out of Hyundai's equivalent cars from the reviews. It's a niche product. But it's not slow, and for what it is, I don't think it's under powered. Fundamentally I'm sure you can have a ton of fun with it. Just like you can with the Miata.

You might convince me that it's a little too much - but even at that, it's still in the same range as its competitors.

I think i'm just mad that they put them in the same scca autocross class as my 25 year old 240. So not fair :( I've been getting raped ever since they came out.

hardly. you're just bench racing.
The car is so light that 200hp is plenty of grunt. Adding to the fact that they handle superbly, they can easily match any SpoCom around a track, and perhaps even surpass it. Seeing as it's not a shuddering pile of loosely held together junk, the company that makes them is hardly bleeding money, and you're not likely to catch a Toyota exec in a crack sting, your comparison to the Delorean is as ridiculous as saying a WRX is nothing more than a riced-out rental car.

Shit, exactly. The BRZ is devoted to one thing - driving pleasure. More like the less rich man's Cayman than a new DeLorean.

They should at least make a turbo version like Hyundai does with the Veloster. It could compete with the 370z. Right now the fastest ive seen is a 14.9 1/4 mile. Realistically 15s. Maybe you can beat some minivans with it.
